Finally I visited Laos after my yearly Singapore conference. I had the luxury to stay two nights at the Luang Say Residence. It’s a unique retreat in Luang Prabang offering fine luxury. The hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. I didn’t want to leave, but at least my transfer to the airport was in style. Read on to find out why you should stay at the Luang Say Residence, but lets start with a video.
The hotel
The Luang Say Residence is located a 5 minute drive from downtown Luang Prabang. It’s a secluded garden with colonial style houses in which the rooms are located. In the main building you find the lobby, restaurant and bar. On the first floor there are several larger rooms as those in the different houses. Small paths lined with tropical trees and plants lead you to the houses. I was in room 101 which was in the first house on the ground floor directly behind the main building. Check-in was very quick and I was personally escorted to the room. The staff is very friendly and they made my stay a memorable one.
The rooms at Luang Say Residence
The rooms are large with a terrace or balcony. A large (I’m almost 2 meters) comfortable bed where I could catch a good night of sleep. The air-conditioning was working perfect. I like it cold and with the 40 degrees Celsius outside I needed it. Each room has a sitting area. All furniture is made from teak wood giving the room a very warm atmosphere. The bathroom is large with rainforest shower and high quality amenities. A bath is present in the larger rooms. It’s a room where I could easily spend a week as it has all the comfort I require during a combined business and leisure trip.
Facilities at Luang Say Residence
In the main building of the Luang Say Residence are the bar and restaurant. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is served a la carte which I like. I know what I want in the morning and this way it’s fresher plus I can update my social media while waiting for it. It was actually served very quick. They serve fresh pressed juices mixed with herbs from the organic garden. A healthy start in the morning. I always take two fried eggs sunny side up and a noodle soup. It’s a kind of habit for me if I’m in Asia. It was way too hot for a large lunch so I skipped it. Some fresh fried spring rolls with a cold beer at the beautiful pool I could not resist. One of the two evenings I had a Laotian tasting dinner at the restaurant. Different traditional Laotian dishes served in a modern way. A great way to taste the different tastes of Laos. The restaurant is furnished in colonial style. The bar is a cozy place to have a cocktail in the evening. If you want you can watch a movie in the cinema. I suggest to watch an old French movie to get the real colonial feeling. The chefs really know how to prepare a great meal. The bartenders a refreshing cocktail. The service is outstanding.
Dining & Drinking at Luang Say Residence
The pool at the Luang Say Residence is a beautiful large pool integrated into the garden. One side of the pool blends into the garden while on the other side is the terrace. Plenty of sunbeds make sure that everyone can get a spot. In the back of the garden the hotel has an organic garden. Ingredients are used in their gastronomical dishes. If you want to go to downtown Luang Prabang the hotel offers a free shuttle. A free shuttle is also offered to a nearby SPA as the hotel itself doesn’t have one. I loved the pool in the afternoon after a day in the Laotian heat.
Conclusion
If you visit Luang Prabang in Laos I recommend staying at the Luang Say Residence, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH). They have large comfortable rooms located in different houses in the garden. The restaurant serves fine food with ingredients from the organic garden and the bar refreshing cocktails. The pool is amazing and will make your stay enjoyable. I loved my stay and the surprise in the end made it even more memorable. A drive to the airport in a 60’s Mercedes! I felt like a royalty and I’m sure you will as well.
