#TBT [ThrowBackThursday] week 34 of 2015. This week, something I remember from my visit to Uruguay, 1 of the 52 countries I visited prior to 2015.
What I remember most from Uruguay is both the laid back atmosphere compared to its neighboring Argentina, especially Buenos Aires, and the most terrible national airline ever!
Uruguay is a great get-away from bustling Buenos Aires
Let’s start with the stress to get that out of the way. Back in 2012 when I went to Montevideo I thought to save time and fly Air Pluna, the national carrier of Uruguay, from the small Aeroparque Jorge Newbery located downtown Buenos Aires. WRONG! The airport was close to my hotel, just 10 minutes, and I arrived there an hour before my flight. I got to the counter and it said it would have a delay of 30 minutes. Ok, can happen! After 30 minutes and no plane I thought I would ask what was happening and they told me the plane was still on the ground in Montevideo. Now, I know it was only a 30 minute flight so how could it not have arrived by now? 30 minutes became 1 hour, 1 hour became almost 3 hours when finally we departed on our 30 minute flight. What a stress, waiting in a humid hot small terminal it was a bad start of this trip. But I did fly Air Pluna just before it got suspended and liquefied by the Uruguayan government. This made the stress a little bit good. Maybe if they had good service they would have survived, but this is just better for all.
Now the relaxation! That was all the remainder of the time. Uruguay is so quiet and relaxed compared to Buenos Aires. I visited it twice, one time to Montevideo and one time to Colonia del Sacramento. Both cities in Uruguay are just across the water and the second time I did not make the mistake and I took the 1 hour boat in the nice first class with a glass of champagne in my hand 🙂 No stress….
Montevideo is a very vibrant city with a great atmosphere which I can recommend everyone to visit for a great time. Colonia del Sacramento has still the old colonial atmosphere and here you will really unwind – no stress, unless you go gamble in the casino, maybe. I visited in winter so it was not hot but with a blue sky and a nice sunshine I just went from terrace to terrace. I hope to return soon to Uruguay as I want to explore more of the inland and just because your stress will go away there!
