ST. MAARTEN – Sonesta Ocean Point Resort review: Best all-inclusive on St. Maarten

My Caribbean trip this year was dedicatedto  exploring the Dutch Caribbean. I hopped the various Dutch islands. In Sint Maarten I stayed at Sonesta Ocean Point Resort which is an adult only hotel. Their sister property Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino which is family oriented is next door where I stayed as well due to my (hurricane) delay flying out. I will mention my experience there as well. Both stays were perfect as the location is great, rooms are modern and comfortable plus it’s limitless all inclusive. In this Sonesta Ocean Point  Resort review I will tell you all about my experience at the resort.

Sonesta Ocean Point Resort review: The Hotel

Sonesta Ocean Point is located just 5 minutes from the airport on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Caribbean Sea and Maho Beach. I arrived late evening from Miami and was tired. At the hotel gate the friendly staff took quickly care of my luggage and drove me in a golf cart to the reception. Check in was quick and within minutes I was in my room. I did take a glass of cognac before going to bed. It’s limitless all-inclusive remember? So why not.

As I arrived during nighttime it wasn’t till the next morning after opening my curtains that I saw the beautiful view. All rooms have similar views as they all face towards the sea. In front of the modern building is the swimming pool of Sonesta Ocean Point Resort with views of Maho Beach and its bay behind it. Behind the main building is the restaurant of Sonesta Ocean Point and in the front is Sonesta Maho Beach Resort with another pool, gym, restaurants, and beach access.

Sonesta Ocean Point Hotel is modern, and I liked that its adult only but does have access to other facilities at their family friendly sister hotel. The staff was very knowledgeable and happy to assist. They gave some great tips for the island which I could add to my St. Maarten itinerary. Great service!

The rooms at Sonesta Ocean Point Resort

I booked a standard room which I will show you in this Sonesta Ocean Point review. A small corridor leads to the spacious room which has a seating area, TV and minibar cabinet, work desk and a comfortable bed. The corridor gives also access to the bathroom which is large as well. Sliding doors with floor to ceiling windows give access to the balcony. I really loved that spot as you can do great plane spotting there as the view to the left is towards Maho Beach and the runway. The room is well isolated so no worry that plane noise gets into the room.

The bathroom is as said very large and has a huge shower cabin with rainforest shower. No bath but I don’t need one anyway. It’s modern with light colors and the amenities are from Molton Brown. A great brand.

I love free minibars and, with the limitless all-inclusive, it’s included. There are several large bottles of liquor and plenty of soft drinks plus water. On the desk you’ll find the room service menu which, again of course, is included. You can have any meal in your room any time of the day. I didn’t use room service though, but I assume the quality is as good as in the restaurants.

I had 4 great comfortable nights at Sonesta Ocean Point as the rooms are comfortable and spacious. I must add that the ground floor rooms have their own small swimming pool in front if the terrace, which I might opt to book a next time.

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort: The rooms at the sister property are I think slightly smaller but not much. They are similar but have a less choice in the minibar. Who wants 5 bottles of liquor in the room if you are with kids anyway? Room service can bring it if you need it. The bathroom amenities are of a more general brand but good as well. I had also a great comfortable night here.

Sonesta Ocean Point Resort review: Facilities

Facilities are endless at Sonesta Ocean Point Resort, which also include all the facilities of Sonesta Maho Beach Resort. In this hotel review I will mention the obvious you expect from a luxury hotel and explore a few in more detail. Both properties have concierge service, free Wi-Fi, business desk, well equipped gym, and a tour desk. Do read my St. Maarten itinerary as it’s easy to explore the island by yourself.

Spa and massage service is also available which at Sonesta Ocean Point can be done outside overlooking the Caribbean Sea (see photo in gallery). That’s really relaxing! A beach can be accessed from between both properties and Maho Beach is just a 2-minute walk away. Note that ALL beaches on Sint Maarten are public so even if it looks private, they are not.

There are in total 3 pools of which 2 are located within Sonesta Ocean Point. One main pool with pool bar and another pool with artificial beach. Both are very quiet as no kids are allowed. That was one reason I choose Sonesta Ocean Point as I often work at the pool as well. The third pool is in front of Sonesta Maho Beach Resort and has a bar but is much more family oriented. It has slides and other facilities for kids. It does come with more noise of course as well.

All together Sonesta Ocean Point Hotel has plenty of facilities to keep you busy. Nothing was too crowded and the pools very relaxed. I really enjoyed the afternoons on a sunbed at the pool with artificial beach and a nice cocktail in my hand.

Dining & Drinking at Sonesta Ocean Point Resort

Sonesta Ocean Point Resort has, together with those at Maho Beach Resort over a dozen or so restaurants and bars. I’ll cover those I tried in this Sonesta Ocean Point Resort review.

Bars are located at the lobby of both properties, at both pools, one in the Azul restaurant and one next to the Italian restaurant. Except the pool bars they are open late. At Maho Beach Resort there is a deli to grab a coffee and sandwich when you’re hungry but room service at Sonesta Ocean Point serves more.

I haven’t used the all-day dining restaurant which has a buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is also a small pizza outlet serving pizza all afternoon. I did try those, and they are delicious. The Palms Grill us a must try if you’re a meat lover. You grill on a hot stone on your table. Delicious. The Italian restaurant is great as well. Loved the seafood pasta! These 3 restaurants are available for both properties.

At Sonesta Ocean Point there are two more restaurants at the tip of the rock. One is tappas which is the perfect place to watch sunset before heading downstairs to Azul for dinner. At Azul there is a 3-course menu to choose from. During my 4 nights it had the same 3-4 choices for each course though. Delicious it was for sure. The restaurant also serves breakfast which is buffet and a la carte. For breakfast this is the place to go for Sonesta Ocean Point guests as its much quieter as the all-day dining restaurant.

With all those food and beverage outlets and the limitless all-inclusive your belly will be full all day. I travelled solo so it wasn’t a big problem getting a table, but I recommend reserving well in advance as the grill did book out 2 days in advance for groups. One thing each outlet has in common is that it’s delicious!

Conclusion

If you’re going to Sint Maarten, I highly recommend booking Sonesta Ocean Point or Maho Beach Resort if you’re with kids. Their rooms are spacious and comfortable. There are plenty of facilities including 3 pools and a beach to relax at. With over 12 food and beverage outlets you won’t starve or get thirsty. Make sure to book their limitless all-inclusive program. I hope this Sonesta Ocean Point Resort review helps you decide and I’m sure you’ll love the hotel as much as i did.
