In the weekend of 27-28 September 2014 I did a weekend trip with my daughter to the area around Dusseldorf. On the Saturday we visited these palaces and stayed overnight in Dusseldorf to visit the next day the Zollverein Essen.
How to get to Augustusburg
The Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces at Brühl are situated on a large ground with park and gardens. From the main palace Augustusburg it’s about a 45 minute walk to the Falkenlust Palace. The place is great for a half day or full day tour either from Düsseldorf or from Köln (Cologne).
Augustusburg palace day trip
We arrived at the Augustusburg palace at the end of the morning and directly joined the tour to see the inside rooms. The photo’s of the rooms are not the best due to taken quickly by hand as the tour was quite quick at each room. The palace was build in the 18th century for the Wittelsbach family.
The castle has an U-shape and is three story’s. In the middle one could go from the front to the back with carriages stopping “under” the castle. From there the people could directly enter through the magnificent staircase. The staircase is one of the best I have seen around (see picture). The interiors of the castle has various rooms like dinner room; kitchen; small chapel; guest receiving room; bed rooms. Each room nicely decorated in various styles. In later recent days the castle was also used by the German government to receive guests.
Falkenlust palace day trip
Due to the limitation in time we drove by car to the Falkenlust palace. Between the Augustusburg palace and the Falkenlust palace or hunting lodge there is a huge park and gardens. One can wander easily a full day, make a nice picknick and just relax in the sun. Next to the Falkenlust palace there is a small chapel.
The rooms in the Falkenlust palace are also very nicely decorated and one can explore them freely without a guided tour. After exploring we drove to Dusseldorf where we spend the night.
