#TBT [ThrowBackThursday] week 45 of 2015. This week, something I remember from my visit to Greece, 1 of the 52 countries I visited prior to 2015.
Greece, the land with many islands, a rich history, great food and huge debts. I have only seen Athens and its surroundings which are beautiful with historical places, beaches and nature. Key memories are normally not related to some sightseeing but to personal things. Oh, and do I have some great ones from Athens during this family city trip.
As my wife was still recovering from the accident we decided that on two of the days she would have dinner with one of the kids in the hotel and go to bed early and I would take the other out for a long evening. The day that I went out with my daughter almost cost me a fortune. On the dinner table there was a candle and of course she had to show how long she could put her finger above it. No problem with that, but then she started to roll her napkin and wave it over the table. I told her to be careful with the candle. We dipped some bread in the delicious salads and before I knew it she dipped her napkin into the candle setting it on fire. Luckily it was extinguished quickly but she learned her lesson and never did it again!
Travelling with kids is fun! Funny memories from Greece!
That same day my son bumped into something, my wife told me, which he is now ashamed of in his puberty. After dinner my wife and he had a last drink at the top floor of our hotel when a man with two candy girls enters. My son asked my wife why they were dressed different from the other people. What do you answer? They behaved well, so I have no problem with such a situation but it’s a fun story now in his puberty 🙂
During our visit Greece was already starting to get into financial troubles which would only worsen the years after. It’s funny, we were at an archeological site when we saw there a ceramic vase (see image below left). It caused a bit of laughter and some blushed heads with the kids. Because of the financial crisis in Greece, we as Dutchmen, made some fun of it and just at that same moment we were watching that vase the image on the right appeared on my Facebook account 🙂 Coincidence or faith? It just made us laugh more.
These are some fun things I remember from our city trip to Athens and the surroundings. I also know I do have to return to Greece to see more of the country. I hope to do that in 2016 with an island trip and see more of the north of the country.
