They say the best rice fields and terraces are around Ubud on Bali, Indonesia. My latest trip included a four day visit to Bali so I had to see those rice fields and not just beaches. If possible, I wanted to be as close as possible to them. I wanted private luxury. A quick search learned that The Chedi Club Ubud at Tanah Gajah offers ultimate luxury in the middle of those fields. The hotel is part of the GHM Hotel Group and member of the Leading Hotels of the World. I simply had to try this retreat for two nights and it fitted perfect in my wonderful Indonesia itinerary. Join me on a tour where I show you my experiences, but first let’s start with a video impression.
The Chedi Club Ubud
The Chedi Club Ubud is a private retreat surrounded by tranquil rice fields. It’s the former estate of Indonesia’s most famous art collector Hendra Hadiprana. A total of 20 villas are situated around a tropical garden. You will see ponds with swans, palm trees and lots of artwork depicting elephants. When I arrived at the Chedi Club Ubud I directly knew it was a good choice to stay. All the noise from the street was directly gone and I already started to relax while I was escorted to the check-in. After a few formalities I was introduced to my private butler who showed me around the property and my villa. One of the mornings I went on an early walk through the rice fields and villages with her. This is a great way to see the local community and the rice paddy trekking is a signature tour at the property and comes completely complimentary. With just 20 villas you won’t be bothered by other guests and privacy is guaranteed. It’s a perfect setting and I would have loved to stay longer. I can recommend the Chedi Club Ubud to anyone looking for luxury in a unique setting.

The villas at the Chedi Club Ubud
The Chedi Club Ubud has twenty villas which perfectly integrate into the estate’s garden. My butler showed me around my villa which was very private. A large door gave access to the private garden of the villa. It had a pretty large private pool and a large area to relax with a cold cocktail. The villa has one large room divided by a wall in two. In the front a very comfortable bed and behind the wall the option to store luggage and a desk to work from. En-suite is a large rain forest shower and two large sinks. A huge bath is outside which is a really nice place to relax. I travelled with my daughter and she used the bath more as the swimming pool! At any time it’s possible to call the butler if you need something including the complimentary laundry. I like art. The villas are decorated with items from the collection of Hendra Hadiprana. Local pieces of art are complemented with local traditional details and warm teak wooden colors. I felt at home in this villa.
Facilities at the Chedi Club Ubud
The Chedi Club Ubud has all the facilities one would expect from a luxury retreat. Two of them were for me and my daughter the most important: the pool and the SPA. Other facilities are a local shop, option to arrange tours on Bali and other services. The pool is a unique place located in the center of the estate just next to the amphitheater. A complimentary afternoon tea is served anywhere you want. I did one overlooking the rice fields and one at the pool. Cocktails are a great refreshment, but I don’t like sweet ones. I loved the lemongrass/lemon cocktail with vodka in the heat of Bali. The pool has a bar for lunch or even dinner; they will serve you anywhere you want. Sunbeds are just on one side of the pool which made it more private. You don’t look towards anybody else. Also at the pool there are elephants; they pour water into the pool. I’m not a big swimmer but both days I joined my daughter for a swim in the afternoon. We had a good time but even better were my surprises at the SPA and restaurant. Continue reading.

Have you ever been to a SPA or gym that overlooks rice fields? Probably not or you have also stayed at the Chedi Club Ubud. They have those views. One of the days I surprised my daughter with a SPA treatment for two. I scored big points with that 😉 The SPA treatments are of high quality as are the products used. A great way to relax and just forget about work stress.
Dining & Drinking at the Chedi Club Ubud
A signature experience at the Chedi Club Ubud is a private romantic dinner surrounded by rice paddies. This rice paddy romantic dinner I did together with my daughter. No Wi-Fi connection: we talked! Romantic candle light and the quality time with my daughter made this an unforgettable experience. The five course dinner is served on a private patio in the middle of the rice fields. Chef Dean Nor personally greeted us and made sure that we had a bit of influence on the surprise dishes. I love meat, so we had Wagyu beef. My daughter loves scallops, so we had scallops. A star dinner under a starry night!
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the restaurant with open walls overlooking the rice fields. You can enjoy it in your private villa too but the view is simply amazing. Breakfast is served fully a la carte. Quantities are large so the 2nd day I just ordered one dish first to share with my daughter. The fresh fruit has amazing taste and the rolls and pastries just come from the oven. I’m a person that normally skips or has a quick breakfast at home but here I took my time. I didn’t have lunch at the Chedi Club Ubud but did take dinner twice. One time the signature romantic rice paddy dinner as described above and one time a la carte. All dishes are made of high quality local produce of which some in the chef’s own garden. If you take the rice field morning trekking with your butler you will see the hotel gardens too. Friendly staff serves everything and is also in for a chat. Luxury treatment but also personal.
Conclusion
If you visit Bali and you are looking for a unique place to stay I highly recommend to stay at the Chedi Club Ubud. The estate offers a beautiful garden setting with private villa’s each having a private butler. Delicious food made from local produce and the best ingredients that make your mouth water. A SPA with a view and relaxing treatments. The villas are designed in a traditional Balinese way giving a great atmosphere. Comfortable beds, private pool and other amenities will make you feel at home. I wanted to stay longer but my Indonesia trip continued after two days. I highly recommend staying at the Chedi Club Ubud Bali.
