A long mid-week get-away to the sun. We travelled this with the family including two small kids of 5 and 7 years old. The 3.5 days are enough to see the cultural sights in Marrakesh and do a one day trip outside of the city.
Day 1 – Departure from Dusseldorf Weeze airport
This trip started with a beginners error, I booked the flight on Ryan air: one big disaster and delays! Never again.
We arrived VERY LATE evening to our golf resort in Marrakesh.
Day 2 – Sightseeing with the hop-on hop-off bus
We stopped at the train station, various other small stops and final stop we did at the Palais Badii. Lots of history after which we had time to check out the Jewish cemetery with the tombs of Saadiens. The afternoon we spend at the pool for some relaxing, especially for the kids.
Day 3 – Marrakesh by Taxi & the Pool
A hop-on hop-off bus is nice but not ideal especially in countries where taxi’s are cheap. Today we decided to hire a taxi for the (full) day and just have us drive around to see the places we wanted to see. We started with a stroll (around 45 minutes) through the Souks and the Djemaa El-Fna to get some photo’s with snakes and monkeys. After we visited the Menara Gardens just on the edge of the city on the west, we spend around 30-45 minutes there and we took the taxi to the tannery, where you get a “free” tour. After the tour they will try to sell you any kind of leather product. Just give a small tip and ignore this. All the afternoon we spend the time at the pool.
Day 4 – Ourika Valley in the Atlas Mountains
Tired of the hustle of the city? Then a day trip to the Ourika Valley is a must, the nature is beautiful. One thing: take a private car with driver and avoid stopping at each shop for tourist en route and having freedom to where-ever you want to go! We did a stop at a Berber house, a Camel ride and a nice lunch. A nice walk to the waterfalls and some small mountain walk. A nice get-away from the city life.
Day 5 – Pool & Home
The last day we spend until lunch time at the pool and had a great lunch at the restaurant which is Michelin-star worthy ! Then back home on a terrible Ryan-air flight; knowing we had to pay for food, no problem, but actually GETTING food: no way ! (they just sold out everything on the way TO Marrakesh). Never never again; not worth the savings. Our trip to Morocco came to an end but I would like to return there to make a road trip through all of Morocco.
